Most builders treat cleaning as a single line item at the end of the job. On any project running longer than a few weeks, that is usually the more expensive choice. Progressive construction site cleaning during the build reduces your final clean, improves safety and keeps trades moving.

The safety case

Housekeeping is one of the most common sources of site incidents, and it is entirely preventable. Offcuts and packaging across walkways, cable and strapping underfoot, blocked emergency egress, dust accumulation on stairs and in stairwells: all of it is trip, slip and fire risk.

It is also the first thing anyone notices on a site walk. A site that is visibly under control reads as a site that is being managed, which matters when a client, consultant or regulator visits unannounced.

A scheduled clean, even weekly, keeps walkways clear and egress paths open without pulling your own trades off tools to do it.

The productivity case

Trades working in a cluttered environment are slower. They spend time clearing space before they start, moving other people's material and hunting for tools in debris.

There is also the hidden cost of using your own labour for cleaning. Having a carpenter or apprentice sweep for two hours costs more per hour than a cleaner doing it faster, and it takes them off the work you actually engaged them for.

A regular site clean removes both problems for a predictable weekly cost. Ask us to quote a progressive schedule alongside your final clean and compare the numbers.

The final clean maths

This is the part that surprises people. The final clean is priced on labour hours, and labour hours depend heavily on site condition.

A site that has been progressively cleaned arrives at the final clean with debris already gone, less accumulated dust in tracks and voids, and no build-up of adhesive and paint that has had months to cure. Hardened residue takes far longer to remove than fresh residue.

Across a longer project, the reduction in the final clean plus the avoided risk of a re-clean generally offsets a large part of the progressive cleaning cost. You are moving spend forward, not adding it, and buying a safer site in the process.

What a progressive site clean covers

Scoped to the stage of the build, typically:

  • Removal of rubbish, offcuts, packaging and strapping to your bins or skip
  • Sweeping and dust suppression of floors and walkways
  • Keeping access routes, stairs and emergency egress clear
  • Cleaning site amenities, lunchrooms and toilets
  • Site office cleaning
  • Wiping down of completed areas to keep dust off finished surfaces
  • Protection of finished floors and surfaces in traffic paths

Frequency is the main variable. Weekly suits most commercial projects, with a heavier clean at the end of each major stage.

Amenities are not optional

Site toilets and lunchrooms are a compliance requirement and a morale issue. They are also the thing subcontractors complain about most, and clean amenities are one of the cheapest ways to keep good trades willing to come back to your sites.

We can include amenities in a progressive schedule or run it as a standalone service on longer projects.
