Handover is the moment your project is judged, and cleaning is the last variable you control before it. This is how to sequence handover cleaning in Melbourne so the clean supports your completion date instead of threatening it.

Handover clean versus final clean

The terms get used interchangeably, which causes real scoping problems.

The final clean is the detailed pass once trades are substantially complete. It is the heavy work: dust removal, joinery, glass, wet areas, floors.

The handover or presentation clean is the shorter pass immediately before your client walks through. It addresses marks made since the final clean, re-detailing glass, touching up floors, and presenting the space.

The defect clean happens after the defects walk, cleaning up after trades who returned to fix items.

Most projects need at least the final clean and a handover pass. Quoting them as one line item is where trouble starts, because when the date shifts nobody knows what has been paid for.

Sequencing against your program

A reliable sequence for a commercial handover:

  1. Trades substantially complete. Final clean begins.
  2. Final clean completed, at least one clear day before inspection. Buffer is not optional.
  3. Internal inspection by you. Walk it in daylight and under lights, checking glass and floors from a low angle.
  4. Handover clean. Short pass immediately before the client walkthrough.
  5. Defects walk.
  6. Defect clean. After trades have completed rectification works.

The step people cut is the buffer between the final clean and inspection. Without it, any problem found becomes a delay rather than a fix.

Protecting the clean once it is done

A finished clean degrades quickly if the site is not controlled. Practical measures that work:

  • Restrict site access after the final clean, with a sign-in sheet if necessary
  • Require trades returning for rectification to lay protection and clean up after themselves
  • Keep protective covering on finished floors in high-traffic paths until the last moment
  • Do not schedule deliveries, furniture or stock between the final clean and the walkthrough
  • Keep the air conditioning filters clean so the system is not blowing dust back onto surfaces

If access cannot be controlled, plan for a handover pass and budget for it. It is cheaper than a second full clean.

Keeping cleaning off the snag list

Cleaning items on a snag list almost always come from the same short list: dust on top of frames and skirtings, film or stickers left on fittings, silicone and adhesive on glass, grout haze in wet areas, and streaked glass or floors.

Every one of those is a scope and sequence problem, not a skill problem. Get the scope written down, get the order of work right, build in a buffer, and add a final walk at a low angle in two lighting conditions. That combination removes most of the risk.

We work to your handover date and provide a written scope before starting. If your client raises a cleaning item, we come back and fix it. Send us your handover date and we will resource backwards from it.

Short-notice handovers

Dates move, and sometimes you need a full clean in 48 hours. That is workable if the cleaner has the crew depth to scale up, and it is exactly why capacity matters more than price when you choose a contractor.

We regularly run short-notice, overnight and weekend handover cleans across Melbourne. If you are up against a date, call 0431 265 151 and we will tell you honestly whether we can hit it.
